SPECIALIST CONCEPT — NOT YET COMMERCIAL

Security investigations
for a distributed grid.

Solar PV, batteries and EV charging depend on digital systems and external information. We are exploring how to investigate when those information sources may be incomplete, inconsistent or manipulated.

THE PHYSICAL CONTEXT

A grid of devices. A web of decisions.

Energy operations use both physical measurements and outside context such as forecasts and demand information. Investigating suspected manipulation may mean examining the relationships among those sources — not simply looking for abnormal current or voltage.

THE QUESTION

What if an attacker changes
the inputs to a decision?

Security monitoring often focuses on device telemetry and commands. But an operational decision may also rely on forecasts, demand models or other contextual inputs.

A compromised information source could influence behaviour even when the device itself appears to operate normally. Distinguishing such a case from benign variation requires careful evidence assessment.

Research question: can combining external context, physical plausibility and digital evidence improve how investigators evaluate competing explanations?

PROPOSED INVESTIGATION MODEL

Look beyond the alert.

Assess whether a claimed explanation remains consistent across independent evidence and the behaviour of the physical system.

01

Acquire

Collect time-aligned operational, security and contextual observations.

02

Cross-check

Compare source consistency and physical operating constraints.

03

Evaluate

Test alternative explanations and record unresolved uncertainty.

04

Report

Present traceable findings for expert review and decision-making.
